On November 12, I gave a presentation at the Fintech Takes Builders Summit in Bozeman, Montana on the widening gap between the practice of banking/finance and the regulation and supervision of banking/finance. Kiah Haslett moderated a lively discussion with roughly fifty fintech builders. Much of the discussion revolved around the ideas reflected in the regulatory coverage ratio that I presented:

Many participants pointed out that while the denominator was clearly growing, the numerator also appears to be shrinking. We discussed how AI may help regulators improve their capabilities and how standard-setting may help reduce complexity. We also discussed the benefits of sandboxes and “gyms” to promote responsible innovation.
